The Harris County portion of Pine Mountain is part of the Columbus, GA-AL Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that extends into Meriwether County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began in 1882 when the railroad spread to Pine Mountain from Columbus, and until the 1960s, the community was known as Chipley. The name was changed to Pine Mountain due to the existence of Callaway Gardens. Pine Mountain is located at 32°51’39” North, 84°51’7″ West (32.860749, -84.851848). The city is located along U.S. Route 27, which runs north to south through the city, leading northwest 17 mi (27 km) to LaGrange and south 8 mi (13 km) to Hamilton. Georgia State Route 18 and Georgia State Route 354 intersect U.S. Route 27 in the city limits. Atlanta is 78 mi (126 km) by road to the northeast. The city is located on the northern base of the Pine Mountain Range. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), of which 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.3 km²) is water.
